At least 155 kilograms of stale cakes and puff pastry were seized and confiscated from a bakery and its kitchen in Thillai Nagar on Thursday during checks by Food Safety and Drug Administration officials.
According to a press release, the team carried out the checks based on complaints received from the public and found more than 25 kg of stale cake in the bakery’s showroom. More than 125 kg of savory cakes and pastries containing old meat were then confiscated in the kitchen of the bakery. Emergency prohibition notices have been issued for both locations, the statement said.
Food vendors should not freeze leftover cooked food as it is unsanitary and can cause cross-contamination, the statement said. “Anyone who breaks the rules will be prosecuted under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006,” said R. Ramesh Babu, Designated Officer, Food Safety and Drug Administration, Tiruchi.
Food security officials also seized and destroyed 40 kilos of expired non-vegetarian food from restaurants in the Chathiram bus stand area. Expired non-vegetarian foods have been found in restaurant freezers. Thirteen restaurants were inspected during the operation in the area, according to department officials.
