Vancouver is blessed with a rich and diverse food culture, one we are constantly learning about.
Bao Bakery is a bakery that has recently appeared on our radar of special and unique places.
This Chinese-Filipino bakery, located at 5115 Joyce Street, specializes in steamed buns, pastries and other baked goods.
Bao Bakery has an impressive array of offerings, both sweet and savory, with everything from dim sum, steamed buns, baked buns, frozen home rolls, to a few options drinks too.
Standout menu items include Bola Bola Steamed Buns (with chicken and pork), Steamed Buns, Pineapple Baked Buns, Curried Beef Buns and the sui mai spicy pork dumplings, to name a few.
Many of the ready-to-eat rolls you’ll find in the shop are also sold frozen in quantities of six, meaning you can take the candy home ready to be baked (or steamed) fresh.
Pastries on offer include sesame balls, red bean fritters, and several flavors of mochi — as well as a seasonal Halo Halo dessert, only available during the summer months.
This spot also offers rotating specialties, such as its panko curry beef bun, inspired by Japanese curry.
The fusion of Chinese and Filipino bao and baking practices here is what really makes this place stand out – traditional Filipino flavors, like ube, are deliciously cozy alongside Chinese-inspired treats like sesame balls stuffed with sweet red beans.
Bao Bakery also has a few drinks to help wash down all your baked goods, like chai lattes and matcha.
This spot is a certified neighborhood gem in this city, and while you can’t get there in person, you can order Bao Bakery’s products on Uber Eats and Skip the Dishes.
